Salsa de Habanero

Summer parties are starting and who doesn’t like to bring something that everyone enjoys and compliments? I mean, let’s be honest… I do! haha. If you like spice, and even if you don’t, this salsa is always a hit! Habanero chilies have always been popular in my house growing up, and it’s been fun to find them in local shops at the moment. I have been quite fortunate to have a father in law who grows Habanero and other sorts of chilies which I tend to use, but don’t worry, I did a little bit of homework for you and if you are in the UK you can get them at Tesco in the mixed chilies section!

Prep Time: 10 min
Cook Time: 15 min
Total Time: 25 min

Ingredients

1 onion
6 tomatoes
1/2 cup of water
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 garlic cloves
1 habanero chili
1 tablespoon of olive oil
1 small bunch of coriander

Things you will need: blender, frying pan, and disposable glove to avoid burning your hand with the chili.

Recipe

Step 1- Preheat oven grill* to 200 C. While your grill is heating, peel onion and garlic. Cut onion into 4 pieces. Next put on a glove and cut your habanero chili into half lengthwise and de-seed chili. Next cut tomatoes into halves and put to one side. Place onion, garlic, and chili on a baking sheet and place in oven for 10 min. *Keep oven cracked open and air vent on low to allow air to circulate and avoid smoke setting off your smoke alarm.

Step 2 Once your your chili, onion and garlic is grilled, put them in a blender and leave to one side. Add 1/2 cup of water into blender.  Next on a medium heat cook tomatoes until skin is soft. If your tomatoes begin to stick to the pan, add water and keep stirring (It’s ok if you need to do this more than once). You will want to remove the skin once it’s soft enough to almost slide off. If you are having a hard time removing the skin while it’s cooking, you can opt to wait and use a sieve over a bowl once it’s done cooking and press the tomato sauce out with a spoon.

Step 3- Pour sauce into blender, small bunch of coriander, olive oil and salt. Blend until smooth. You can either have it fresh or place in fridge to cool a bit. Now, enjoy!!
